Historical Context: This Katana is attributed to the Tegai school of the Yamato tradition, active during the Kamakura period. The Tegai school, originating near the Tengai-mon of Todaiji Temple in Nara, was founded by Kanenaga around 1288-1293. Known for supplying swords to temples, Tegai smiths were integral in the defense and armament of religious establishments in Yamato province.

The Tegai school's blades are distinguished by their traditional Yamato characteristics, such as a high shinogi-zukuri and iori mune, with marked curvature (koshi-zori) and chu-suguba hamon with nie. The tight, yet beautiful ko-itame hada and the boshi with strong nie and yakizume are signature traits of this school's craftsmanship. These features demonstrate the Tegai school's commitment to quality and aesthetic in blade making.

This Katana's mumei status and length make it a unique and valuable piece, representing the rich history and skilled craftsmanship of the Tegai school during a pivotal era in Japanese sword-making. Its preservation and certification by NBTHK underscore its cultural and historical significance.
